With the help of MIRI and NIRCam instruments, scientists identified the methyl cation (CH3+) in space for the first time. The molecule is essential because it promotes forming more complex organic compounds. Even though the star is a red dwarf, the system is still exposed to intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation from nearby massive stars. In many cases, the UV destroys complex organic compounds. Therefore, the discovery may seem entirely unexpected. Indicating a further understanding of how UV radiation affects the chemistry of protoplanetary disks will help us learn more about the origin of life.
